Pay what you can

Directed by John Huston, the 1953 film Beat the Devil is a satirical, tongue-in-cheek noir caper. The plot follows a motley crew of eccentric international con men—including American expatriate Billy Dannreuther (Humphrey Bogart) and a quirky gang led by Peterson (Robert Morley)—who are trying to scheme their way into securing uranium-rich land in Kenya.

While waiting in an Italian port for a ship to Africa, they are joined by a seemingly innocent British couple, the Chelms. What follows is a bizarre, shaggy-dog adventure filled with double-crosses, romantic affairs, and relentless mistrust. After a disastrous boat journey that lands them in North Africa, the bumbling conspirators are briefly captured, but ultimately their greed is resolved when the unassuming husband actually strikes it rich.
