Pay what you can

Set in 1976 on the fictional Red Crow Mi'gmaq reservation, Rhymes for Young Ghouls follows Aila, a sharp and resilient 15-year-old girl navigating a world defined by trauma and systemic oppression. By law, every Indigenous child on the reserve must attend the valley’s notorious residential school, a place of severe abuse run by the sadistic Indian Agent, Popper. To avoid this fate, Aila runs a lucrative drug-dealing operation, using the money to pay a "truancy tax" to Popper to secure her freedom.

Her precarious survival strategy shatters when her estranged father is released from prison, her savings are stolen by Popper, and she is forced into the residential school she spent years escaping. Once trapped inside, Aila refuses to let the institution crush her spirit. Instead, she unites with a group of reservation youth to orchestrate a fierce and calculated plot for vengeance and justice against Popper and the school's abusers.

Director Jeff Barnaby uses a unique blend of gritty realism, dark humour, and surrealist, comic-book-inspired horror imagery to subvert traditional victim narrative. Ultimately, the film serves as a powerful, unflinching exploration of Indigenous resilience, historical trauma, and the fierce reclamation of power in the face of colonial violence.
