Directed by Georgia Oakley, the 2026 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility follows the displaced Dashwood sisters—levelheaded, practical Elinor (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and passionate, impulsive Marianne (Esmé Creed-Miles)—as they grapple with financial insecurity and societal limits in 18th-century England. After their father’s death leaves them without inheritance, Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters relocate from their comfortable family estate to a modest cottage in Devonshire. There, Elinor nurses a quiet, restrained affection for the gentle Edward Ferrars (George MacKay), while Marianne is swept off her feet by the dashing, adventurous John Willoughby (Frank Dillane), ignoring the steady, devoted devotion of the older Colonel Brandon (Herbert Nordrum).
The sisters’ contrasting temperaments are pushed to their limits as hidden entanglements, broken promises, and social ruin upend their romantic expectations. Edward is disinherited after a secret prior engagement comes to light, and Willoughby abruptly abandons Marianne for a wealthier match, plunging her into a reckless, life-threatening despair during a rainy autumn evening. Through grief, near-tragedy, and deep endurance, the film centers less on traditional romantic triumph and more on the grounded, resilient bond of sisterhood as both Elinor and Marianne eventually find hard-won peace, maturity, and genuine companionship.
