In the 1945 classic comedy-drama The Bells of St. Mary's, unorthodox priest Father O'Malley (Bing Crosby) arrives at an inner-city parish to evaluate its crumbling, dilapidated school. He and the headstrong headmistress, Sister Mary Benedict (Ingrid Bergman), clash in good-natured rivalry over their teaching methods but ultimately unite to save the institution from closure.
The pair attempt to convince Horace Bogardus (Henry Travers), a wealthy and stubborn neighboring businessman, to donate his newly constructed building to the parish. Meanwhile, Sister Mary secretly battles a severe illness. Following a heartfelt but difficult decision to keep her health issues hidden, the two overcome their differences, resulting in a heartwarming resolution for both the children and the school.
