Directed by Michael Dowse, the biographical comedy-drama The Stunt Driver is based on the true 1970s story of Canadian daredevil Ken Carter, famously known as the "Mad Canadian". Played by Jay Baruchel, Carter is a veteran world-champion stunt driver with a history of broken bones who wants to cap off his career with a massive payday, ultimate mega-stardom, and a chance to eclipse his American rival, Evel Knievel (played by Ben Foster). To pull off his grand finale, he sets his sights on an absurdly dangerous feat: launching a rocket-powered car a full mile across the St. Lawrence River from Canada into the United States.
To achieve this impossible dream, Carter enlists top-tier rocket car designer Dick Keller (Ed Helms) and builds a massive 90-foot ramp, all while juggling intense public doubt, personal demons, and competing documentary crews capturing the chaotic buildup. The film highlights his singular, blinding obsession with etching his name into history despite facing deep-seated fears—including a surprising aversion to water—and an array of logistical setbacks. It presents a high-octane, underdog portrait of a flawed man willing to risk everything for a single, defining moment in the spotlight.
