During World War II, an elite commando team is sent into the Bavarian Alps to rescue a captured American general holding vital D-Day plans. Led by British Major Smith (Richard Burton) and American Lieutenant Schaffer (Clint Eastwood), the operatives must infiltrate Schloss Adler, an impregnable mountaintop fortress.
As the mission unfolds, the operation proves to be a complex web of deception. Smith discovers there are double agents among them and reveals that the "general" they are meant to rescue is an imposter planted to flush out Nazi spies within British Intelligence. The duo stages a spectacular escape, wreaking havoc on the castle and narrowly fleeing to safety.
